Summer is the perfect time for BBQs, picnics, and outdoor celebrations—but warm weather also creates ideal conditions for food-borne bacteria to thrive. To keep your guests safe and your event a success, follow these simple food safety tips:
1. Keep Hot Foods Hot and Cold Foods Cold
Bacteria multiply rapidly between 40°F and 140°F, known as the “danger zone.” Use insulated coolers with plenty of ice packs for cold items like potato salad, dips, and meats before they’re grilled. Keep hot foods in warming trays or on the grill until it’s time to serve.
2. Don’t Leave Food Out for More Than 2 Hours
Once food is served, the clock starts ticking. On hot days (above 90°F), food should be refrigerated or discarded after just 1 hour. Set a timer to remind yourself to pack leftovers promptly.
3. Use a Food Thermometer
Undercooked meat can be dangerous. Always use a food thermometer to ensure your meats reach safe internal temperatures:
-
Poultry: 165°F
-
Ground beef: 160°F
-
Steaks, chops, fish: 145°F
4. Avoid Cross-Contamination
Use separate cutting boards, plates, and utensils for raw meats and ready-to-eat foods. Never place cooked meats back on the same plate that held raw meat.
5. Wash Hands and Surfaces Often
Whether you’re prepping in the kitchen or outside, wash hands with soap and water before handling food—and make sure utensils and prep surfaces are clean. Keep hand sanitizer nearby if running water isn’t available.
Final Food Safety Tip:
Plan ahead. Prep and pack with care, keep an eye on the temperature, and your summer gathering will be remembered for great food—not a case of food poisoning.
